National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly handing out marijuana (wee) to some Ejisu residents as part of a vote-buying strategy during the recent parliamentary by-election in Ejisu.
He emphasised that such reckless distribution of an illegal and detrimental substance by the NPP, even within its stronghold, reflects an extreme level of desperation and should be denounced by all discerning and principled Ghanaians.
“How can you be going for an election in your stronghold? You’re supposed to have the interest, the health, the life, and the interest of the heart. But because of power, the desperation for power, you go and distribute marijuana (wee), illicit drugs?” Sammy Gyamfi wondered on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana Show.
He maintained that the allegations of the NPP giving out marijuana to sway voters in favour of their parliamentary candidate have been substantiated by residents who either received offers or witnessed NPP affiliates distributing the drug in the Constituency.
Gyamfi is convinced that this instance of distributing an illegal drug to voters is unprecedented in Ghana’s history until the NPP’s involvement in Ejisu. He condemned the act as a calculated move by the NPP to endanger the youth’s well-being.
The Ejisu parliamentary by-election took place on April 30, 2024, due to the passing of John Kumah, the area’s MP.
Kwabena Boateng of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) emerged victorious in the by-election, securing 27,782 votes (55.8% of the total votes cast).
Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, running as an independent candidate, finished second with 21,534 votes (43.3% of the total votes cast), with the remaining candidates sharing the rest of the votes.
